Ten years after.

Nuff said.

Remaining Chickens Named

At the beginning of the year when we got our chicks, I said, "We can not and will not name the chicks."  If there was the possibility of eating them, they could not be named.

Well, now that we have three chickens left out of the original sixteen, I guess they deserve to have names.

The rooster is Brutis.  He's a Chochin.  My spelling might be wrong.  He is big and white.  Feathered legs and feet.  Very pretty, if a chicken can be pretty.  Wait, my husband just said Brutis is NOT a chicken.  He is a Rooster.  It's a male thing apparently.

The Delaware hen is Nell.  Don't ask me why, just cuz.

The Red Sexling hen is Annie.  I don't know if she's an orphan, but resembles the red hair of Annie in the movie.

So, guess there will only be store bought chicken for our meals for this year.  Wasn't sure I could really butcher one of my chickens, but that is why none of them got to be named.  Will try again next year.

But, I will enjoy the eggs these two last hens are providing on a daily basis.

Sorry dogs, not enough for you now.  The consequences of your actions.  Guess the dogs should be considered innocent until proven guilty.  No way to prove anything.  Just can't figure out what else could have happened.

Part of Life Off the Grid.

Coyotes on the Hill

I think my dogs are somewhat innocent in the chicken massacre that happened on Tuesday a couple weeks ago.  I only say somewhat innocent.

The three coyotes I saw at the end of our road at the beginning of the week, and again this morning on the hill behind our place, I feel are more the culprits.  I believe my dogs just finished what these coyotes started.  Doesn't make them less guilty.

We have had our chickens since the beginning of April, as chicks.  Our dogs were curious about them, but did not bother them.  Once the chicks were big enough to call chickens, and let out to roam a bit, the dogs knew they best not bother them or the rath of "mom" would come down upon them.  The dogs had  intermingled with the chickens for five months.  So, in my opinion there had to be some sort of catastrophic event that occurred to get my dogs involved.  I can only think, my dogs were fast asleep in the shade when the coyotes came in for a meal.  The ruckus that followed woke up my dogs.  In the excitement of coyotes and chickens running all over and making a bunch of noise, my dogs continued the game of chase the chickens which were running all over.

This is my opinion since, with seven chickens down and out (dead), there was only one chicken missing.  I would think, three coyotes, three chickens gone.  Not just one chicken gone, and seven dead chicken bodies found in various places all about the place.  Front yard, back yard, down by the horse pen, in the chicken pen.  The Great Chicken Massacre of 2011.  Feathers still strewn all over the place.  Ugly.

They are just dogs.  Should they be held accountable for their behavior?  Out here where we live, they are allowed to chase rabbits.  Both Jack and Cottontail.  They are encouraged to chase, and actually kill, yes, kill, pack rats.  Their hunting instints are strong.  In some circles, my dogs would be put to sleep if it were found they had KILLED.  Sorry, can't do that.  They may be guilty of being involved in the Massacre, but we live by different standards than the norm.

We life off the grid.

Labor Day 2011 Over and Out

The end of a nice, long weekend.  Too bad.

Items of Interest:

Started cleaning out our garage.  What a mess a cute little creature called a pack rat can make.  Googled pack rat deterrent.  Found a couple ideas to try to get the little guys to move to somewhere else.  Peppermint oil?  We'll see.  If anyone has any ideas other than poison, please let me know.  I HATE pack rats!

Our new generator is working great!  In one day I managed to do three loads of laundry (wash and dry) and a load of dishes, plus the refrigerator was on ALL day.  Plus my computer has been on all day.  Plus I had to refill one horse water bucket because it had a dead ground squirrel in it.  Figures because yesterday when I filled water buckets, I filled them to the top because the work week was starting soon and I didn't want to come home and find an empty water bucket.

Man in Idaho (or somewhere north of here) being charged for killing a grizzly bear in his yard to protect his family?  The bear is considered an endangered species, so is protected.  Wasn't his family endangered by the bear and didn't it have the right to be protected?

The month of August showed no growth in jobs.  Now our president is trying to pass a job bill?  I'd say a little too little, a lot too late.

Other blog of interest:  Rural Revolution.

So Life Off the Grid continues.

Typing Errors?

In reading my last post, there are bunch of typing errors.  Ok, so my keyboard is not the newest version.  It has been around for a few years, and yes, in Northern Nevada my house is definitely not dust free, which creates a dusty keyboard.

I will be more careful in the future to proofread my writings to be sure they are complete.

Please understand if there is a grammatical or spelling error.

I often write the way I speak.  Fragments, yes.  Slang, yes.

Read what I have to say or not, doesn't matter to me.  I just want to voice my opinions.

God first.  Family second.  The rest follow.

By the way, I live "Off the Grid."  My choice.

Why is Everything so DIFFICULT????!!!!

I just want to have a blog where my husband and I can voice our opinions.  What an ordeal!!!!!!!

Still Day One Sort Of

I love learning new things.  My question is, why with all the new technology do things have to be so hard to figure out.  All I want to do is voice my opinion and allow my husband to voice his opinion on a public forum.  Since I have not gotten his comment test, I'm not sure this is working.  It should be a bunch easier.  I have already had a blog here, but couldn't find a way in, so had to start something new.  That is actually okay since my life has changed tremously since I had the other blog.

A new president with totally different viewpoints.  From mine anyway.

Still checking to see if this is working, just telling my truth of life off the grid.

Day One

This is definitely not day one, but since I could not find a way to get into my previous blog from a couple years ago, I start over.

Life Off the Grid is a choice my husband and I have made.  Electricity from the power company is now available to us.  It was not an option when we originally built our home in 1996.  Electricity to our property would have cost us between $48,000 and $54,000.  We opted to install solar power at about $12,000.

If we had made the decision to have power from the power company installed, we would have already lost our home because of the current economic situation in our great USA.
